Abu Dhabi, 10 February 2019 – For the first time ever, the Emirates territory hosts a WorldTour Team Time Trial. Last year, at the Abu Dhabi Tour, we got a taste with the Individual Time Trial won by the future World Champion, the Australian Rohan Dennis. This year the hosting island is changed and the Team Time Trial will be raced at Al Hudayriat Island, a brand new leisure and entertainment destination.

The stage has a very fast course combining the two different cycle path loops of 5 and 10km, with straights punctuated only by two U-turns around km 3. The road is perfectly flat, wide and with wide-angle turns that will enable the teams to keep a very high speed: expected speed averages are over 55km/h.

The riders will encounter strong winds and the smell of the ocean with the main landmarks of Abu Dhabi as their background. Only the first man of the fastest team across the finish line will wear the Red Jersey, the leader classification jersey, sponsored by Emirates.

AL HUDAYRIAT ISLAND

The project, which has been years in the making since it was first announced in 2009, was partly launched and officially inaugurated by Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan in May 2018. Among the attractions are a 600-metre beach, running and cycling tracks (two loops of 5 and 10km), water sports facilities, a bouncy castle and a children’s playground. Al Hudayriat Island is part of a new city development that will include housing for Emiratis, and commercial attractions. The island is also designed to host a world series of triathlons (with Olympic-standard facilities), while other athletic attractions include five football fields, four basketball courts, four volleyball and four beach football courts.
